High on Trek -or- Uhura is my Idol
Went to see Star Trek a few hours ago. Oh my god. Oh. My. God. I'm stunned. It's the most beautiful thing I've seen in ages. I loved it. Loved. Passionate love. And I'm in love with all the characters. I want to marry Kirk, Spock, and Uhura. Especially Uhura. Wow. Reactions now.
Ok, reactions. What didn't I like? There's less of that so I'll start with it. I didn't like that Kirk was born in an escape pod as his father valiantly died. It was so damn cheesy I was embarrassed for the movie. Spock's childhood scenes, and the young Spock were spot on. I felt for that kid in two seconds flat. Kirk's? Holy crap, have these people ever SEEN Iowa? I know I have a unique perspective having lived just a few miles from Kirk's hometown of Riverside, Iowa. But, still. There was desert sand along the road. And that canyon? Are they idiots? I was amused by the giant shipyard in the middle of nowhere Iowa as well. But, beyond that... I was caught up in the Iowa connection like a moron at a rock concert when they scream the city's name, you know?
In my mind when Kirk sauntered up to Uhura in the bar, said bar was in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids corridor and Uhura was a recent grad in linguistics/communications at the federation commandeered University of Iowa. So, In my mind, she went to my college and was in sort of my department, just 300 years from now. I know she's from the United States of Africa/African Federation or whatnot and probably really went to school there and was only in Iowa for some sort of recruiting or reporting for duty, but in my fantasy world, this is how it goes. This makes my not so secret fantasy of becoming a linguist even harder to supress.
And, yes, I caught the Slusho Abrams reference in the bar when Uhura ordered drinks. And, I laughed. Akane was confused. Als noticed the Nokia product placement and almost booed.
I loved the little we saw of the academy. I loved the out from left field Spock/Uhura romance. I didn't get it at first. Or maybe I didn't believe it. But, by the third scene with that kiss on the transporter pad where Kirk learns Uhura's first name by hearing Spock moan it? Beautiful. As was Spock moaning. New fantasy. It was so beautiful and I'm so desperately in love with Uhura at this moment I can forgive Spock for not making eyes at Kirk more. The Spock/Uhura passion did make me think of this, though. Now I can't unsee it. I imagine Uhura is now making bedroom eyes at her lover. Aiya!
Now about that time travel crazy...
The whole reboot of the mythology caught me by surprise. When they destroyed Vulcan I was pretty blase about it figuring Spock would find a way to bring his people back. They always fix their time travel mistakes in Star Trek. They even have that agency in Star Fleet set up to deal with time fuckups for crying out loud! When it seemed Spock was satisfied that the death of Vulcan was just another occurrence of a parallel universe? My heart broke. Six billion Vulcans died! All I could think was: "Tuvok's dead! No! Nooo!!!" I feel like this will piss off many people. The Vulcan species is sacred! I wonder if it will put people off of the movie and it's new universe. I wonder if the remaining 10,000 Vulcans will have key roles in the future movie plots.
Enough sad. How about the pretty? Zachary Quinto's Spock and Chris Pine's Kirk are so beautiful I could not stop leering at them throughout the film. Just... breathtaking. I never found Zachary Quinto attractive before. As Sylar, he seemed really ordinary to me. In general every character was so rich and full and confident and capable and appealing that I want to either be or be with virtually all of them.... except Chechov, Pike, and the villan.
Sulu's ass kicking was spectacular and a little unexpected. I loved how every character got a showcase in the end, but none of these showcases took away from the film. They all forwarded it and fit in seamlessly with the story. Checkov's transporter save. Sulu's swordplay that saves Kirk's life. Uhura jumping up and providing intel, then turning around and comforting her lover Spock all while standing her ground with Kirk. Scotty was nutty and comedic all while proving his genius. And Bones? I never liked him until now. His sardonic personality put me off in TOS, but provided balance in the film.
I love the new effects. The new transporter one especially tickles me pink. The way the phaser battles flowed more like gun battles? So appropriate. The new engine room (which I read was filmed in the the Budweiser factory) actually feels like an engine room. This Enterprise feels like a crowded aircraft carrier. It feels real.
That was my biggest impression. This movie has done to the look and feel of Star Trek, for me, what Dark Knight/Batman Begins did for Batman. I want more. I'm going to go see it at least two more times in the theatre. Maybe more. When the film ended I turned to Akane and asked her if she wanted to see the 10PM showing. She looked temtped. Can I preorder the DVD yet? Is there a soundtrack? Oh shit. I want the phasers and other merchandise so badly I can taste it. And, I want a fandom to start. Now. Please. Trekkies, I need you. Come back!
Oh man. Me and spaceships. Joygasm.

Another friend on f-list squeed!likewhoa, too, and a local magazine rated the movie 4/5. I suppose that I need to organize a bit of spare time for a movie visit, then. ;] Glad you enjoyed! I saw the trailer when I went to see "Slumdog Millionaire".

And, I want a fandom to start. Now. Please.
To START?! Hey, lady, it's been around for about four decades, and I can tell ya that *I* never left! Yup. With the new movie out, my first fandom is now cool again. (Well ...by fandom standards, anyway.)
Anyway, glad to see that the "squee" is making its way around.

For the general franchise, yes, but not for the "reboot". Not to mention that the TOS hayday was well before today's online fanfiction craze. Last week I did a token search for costumers and found less than half a dozen resource sites and even fewer photos. By the standards of modern internet fandom, TOS fandom is so tiny and hidden that before this week it was practically nonexistant.
ahh! I have no icon!!! *scrambles*
...I want to see this movie again, NAO. It's beem...weeks. Unnacceptable.
Wanna come up to Wisconsin and watch it with me?
Re: ahh! I have no icon!!! *scrambles*
Seriously! Wish I could visit Wisconsin. I haven't been in ages! Or, at least wish the DVD was out so we could long distance simultaniously watch. Noticed you're in that trek-rewatch comm. Is it any good? *thinks* When is the DVD supposed to be out, anyway?
